International Youth Day 2026: Empowering Young People to Shape a Better Future

Every year on 12 August, the world comes together to celebrate International Youth Day, recognizing the important contributions, creativity, energy, and leadership of young people in building stronger and more inclusive societies.

Young people are not simply the leaders of tomorrow they are leaders today. Across communities, young people are creating businesses, developing innovative technologies, participating in civic life, protecting the environment, promoting peace, and finding new solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges.

Investing in Young People Means Investing in the Future

With young people making up a significant proportion of Africa's population, the continent's future is closely connected to the opportunities available to its youth.

However, many young people continue to face barriers to education, employment, entrepreneurship, healthcare, digital opportunities, meaningful participation, and access to decision-making spaces. These challenges can prevent young people from reaching their full potential.

International Youth Day provides an opportunity to move beyond simply celebrating young people and instead ask an important question:

Supporting youth requires more than encouraging them. It requires investment in skills, education, innovation, decent employment, mental and physical wellbeing, leadership development, and safe spaces where young people can express themselves and participate meaningfully in their communities

Young people should not only be viewed as beneficiaries of development programmes. They should be recognized as partners, innovators, decision-makers, and agents of change.

When young people are given the opportunity to participate, they bring fresh perspectives and practical ideas to the challenges affecting their communities. Their experiences can help organizations, governments, and development partners design programmes that respond more effectively to real community needs.

From grassroots initiatives to digital innovation, young people across Africa are already demonstrating what is possible when they are given the right opportunities and support.

The Power of Sport, Technology and Community

Sport, technology, education, and community engagement can provide powerful platforms for youth development. Sport can help young people develop teamwork, leadership, discipline, confidence, and resilience while creating opportunities for social connection and inclusion.

Technology can open doors to learning, entrepreneurship, employment, creativity, and global collaboration. At the same time, young people need the digital skills and knowledge required to use technology safely, responsibly, and effectively.

Community-based programmes can also create spaces where young people can learn from one another, identify local challenges, and develop solutions that have a lasting impact.

Leaving No Young Person Behind

Youth development must also be inclusive. Young women, young people with disabilities, young people from underserved communities, and those facing economic and social barriers should have equal opportunities to participate and succeed.

Creating inclusive opportunities means listening to young people, understanding the barriers they face, and ensuring that programmes are designed with them not simply for them.

International Youth Day is more than a celebration. It is a reminder that the future we want depends on the opportunities we create for young people today.

Governments, civil society organizations, development partners, schools, communities, businesses, and individuals all have a role to play in creating an environment where young people can learn, innovate, participate, and lead.

Young people also have a role to play: to use their talents, knowledge, creativity, and voices to contribute positively to their communities and to advocate for a future that is more inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable.
