What does it really mean to be there for someone when they need help?

Every year on 19 August, World Humanitarian Day provides an opportunity to recognize the people working to support others through conflict, disasters, displacement, poverty and other difficult circumstances.

But humanitarian action is not always found in the middle of a major crisis. Sometimes, it starts much closer to home in communities where young people need opportunities, families face everyday challenges, and people need someone willing to listen and take action.

In Uganda, many communities continue to face challenges linked to health, poverty, environmental degradation and limited opportunities for young people. These challenges affect not only people's lives today, but also the future they are able to build.

This is where community-based organizations have an important role to play. Through its work in youth empowerment, SRHR, health, climate action and community development, Zannya Africa Foundation (ZAF) contributes to efforts that put people and their needs at the centre of action.

World Humanitarian Day is therefore a moment to look beyond the title of “humanitarian” and recognize something much simpler: the willingness to care, to listen and to do something when others are facing difficult circumstances.

Because sometimes, meaningful change does not begin with a big intervention. It begins with someone choosing to show up.
